Dental Crowns are a cosmetic dentistry restoration used to improve your tooth’s shape or to restore function and strengthen a tooth. Crowns are most often used to cover, or cap, a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size. A crown may be recommended for your tooth for a number of reasons:
- A cracked or leaking filling.
- To support a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining.
- Restores weak, fractured, or broken teeth.
- Covers a tooth that has portions destroyed by tooth decay.
- Covers discolored or misshapen teeth.
- Covers dental implants.
- Covers a tooth that has been treated with a root canal.
So what is a crown? How is it made?
A crown is a covering “cap” that fully covers the portion of your tooth above the gum line. Crowns can be made of porcelain (tooth color), metal, or both (porcelain fused to metal). Crowns made entirely of porcelain mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are esthetically pleasing.
Unlike fillings, crowns are fabricated away from your mouth using your unique tooth impression which is taken after preparing your tooth. With today’s technology, dental laboratory technicians are able to create your nicely shaped fitted crown so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed.
